How We Research
Every guide on The Sofa World starts with one question: will this seating work for the people and room it is meant for? For a sofa, that means the room dimensions, how you use it, who will sit on it and how much care the upholstery needs.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the room and its use
A large sectional is the wrong choice if it blocks a doorway. A sleeper sofa may not fit a room if there is no space to open the bed.
We check overall dimensions, seating capacity, layout, delivery access and the space needed for reclining or sleeping. For fabrics, leather, rugs and companion furniture, we consider wear, cleaning and how the pieces fit with the seating.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the details the maker lists: frame and cushion materials, upholstery type, dimensions, seat depth, assembly needs and what comes with the product.
Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for each claim. We also note the warranty and care instructions the maker lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read what buyers report after living with a product. We look for patterns, like cushions losing shape, upholstery wearing quickly, assembly problems or a mechanism that stops working.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A sofa that suits a large family may score lower in a guide for small rooms.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell similar sofas under close model names, so we check the model details and what comes with it, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and products with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are based on research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
We explain product details to help you compare options. Check measurements, delivery terms and care instructions with the maker or seller before you buy.
